In addition to the excellent schools, a beautiful setting and a great commute location, Lafayette is known for having the most happening downtown in Lamorinda. Lafayette has a wide variety of popular restaurants and shops and there is more development in progress. Thanks to thoughtful planning, downtown Lafayette is charming and fun to explore. Lafayette’s proximity to the bustling Downtown Walnut Creek is also a plus for shopping and dining options.
Mount Diablo Blvd is the main drag in Lafayette and most of the shops and restaurants can be found along this main street or in La Fiesta Square just off Mount Diablo. Chow and Pizza Antica restaurants are popular with families and are always packed. The well respected Postino Restaurant is romantic and perfect for a special occasion. For nightlife, The Round Up Bar and the lounge at Petar's Restaurant (complete with lounge singer Thursday thru Saturday) are both very popular. The many great shops and botiques include everything from local art studios to a specialty pets store. The Lafayette Park Hotel and Spa is the only Five Star Diamond hotel in the East Bay. This attractive hotel is also home to the well-respected Duck Club Restaurant and a full service day spa.
Commuters make the short trip to San Francisco via BART, car, or they hitch a ride with the casual carpool. BART also runs East for commutes to additional business centers.
Lafayette recently finished construction of an attractive Veterans Hall to be shared by Walnut Creek and Lafayette residents. Lafayette is currently working on the construction of a new 30,000 square foot state of the art library due to open in 2008. The new Lafayette Library and Learning Center will have a technology center, meeting rooms, an art and science discovery center and more.
The scenic Lafayette Reservoir is probably the most popular walking/running loop in the area. The paved loop around the reservoir is just under 3 miles. The much longer rim trail is a great option for hikers. The Reservoir is popular for fishing and picnicking and has a great children’s playground. The Lafayette-Moraga trail is another favorite for walking, running and biking. Additional trails and parks in town and the area make this a great city for outdoor recreation. Mount Diablo State Park is a popular nearby destination for hikers and bikers.
Lafayette hosts several events including a reservoir run, egg hunt, downtown concerts and an annual Lafayette Art and Wine Fair . The Art and Wine fair draws a huge crowd and is fun for the family with vendors, wine tents and music tents.
